MADISON - A feedlot will be expanding on property south of Madison and east of Highway 81.
Reigle Cattle Company currently has 14,000 head of cattle on property located at 55527 823rd Road but wants to add an additional 11,000 head.
At the Madison County Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday, Zoning Administrator Heather McWhorter said their last expansion was in 2012. There are two houses that fall withing the setback, but they both provided signed and notarized livestock waivers.
Andy Reigle said they set this expansion up in two phases.
"The first phase is that south 40 acres that already goes into our existing lagoon. Phase two would then require a second lagoon to the northeast."
Commissioner Ron Schmidt asked if they're checking for nitrates, and Travis Casperson with Settje Ag said they are, along with submitting an annual report to the State.
Reigle said they hope to get started on the project this fall.
The Commissioners unanimously approved the feeding operation application.
