Dr. Maureen Tierney

OMAHA - Flu season is here as the flu virus has appeared earlier than it normally does.

Dr. Maureen Tierney, Assistant Dean for Public Health and Clinical Research at Creighton University School of Medicine says there will definitely be more flu cases this year compared to last year as people aren’t masking up as much anymore.

Tierney says the CDC is recommending everyone over the age of six months gets a flu vaccine this year.

"Since we've never had, with the exception of last year, COVID circulating, the one thing you don't want is getting them at the same time or having one of them with RSV. We want to do everything we can to prevent these, so getting the flu vaccine is absolutely crucial."

Tierney says this year’s flu shot will include a good predictive mix of vaccine that will do a good job protecting you from the flu variants.

She says if you’re 65 or older, ask for the high dose of the flu shot as it will give you higher levels of immunity.
