CLARKSON - One person was killed and another severely injured following an accident along the Stanton/Colfax County line Thursday afternoon.
Stanton and Colfax County Sheriffs responded to an accident on Highway 15 and 822nd road northeast of Clarkson around 3:00 p.m. An investigation concluded that a Toyota SUV was traveling northbound on Highway 15 before suddenly turning left onto 822nd road directly in the path of a southbound pickup.
The driver of the SUV, 19-year-old Jeyco Gonzales of Schuyler, was ejected from his vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The pickup driver, 24-year-old Tyler Regan of O’Neill, was extricated from the wreckage and transported to the West Point hospital. He was later medically flown to Bergan Mercy in Omaha after being stabilized with severe injuries.
Seatbelts and airbags did deploy in the pickup. The accident caused the SUV’s front transaxle to detach from the frame and end up in a ditch.
Gonzalez was operating the SUV with a revoked license. Authorities are still trying to determine if alcohol may have been a contributing factor.Â
